Products/Services of Interest to Malta in New Zealand
New Zealand’s exports to Malta are not big but have been building steadily over the past 10 years to now be NZ$16.5 million (Euro 8 million) with just over NZ$10 million be meat and another NZ$5 million of pharmaceutical products. So there are a large number of untapped traditional NZ export products that have not yet been exported to Malta, or imported by a Maltese importer from New Zealand, let alone the potential of using Malta as a base for importing/exporting New Zealand foods, wines and primary products into niche markets in Europe and North Africa.
Malta is a very popular British and European tourist destination because of its history and Mediterranean climate and so the potential for food and wine exports to Malta are excellent. Malta has a small wine industry but little in the way of agriculture and so a significant amount of food and wine is imported
Malta has a rapidly growing IT sector and major companies such as Microsoft have in-country offices. Compared to the rest of Europe Malta is a “low-cost” country with a well educated and IT literate English speaking population. HSBC recently moved one of their major European call centres there – also comments about Smart@City on the Incentives to do Business in Malta page
